LISTED MANOR HOUSE, DEVON

Devon, UK

1999

Hayne Manor is a striking Grade II* Listed Elizabethan property in Devon, with gardens by Repton and remodelled by Sir Jeffrey Wyatt, which we sympathetically restored and refurbished in keeping with the traditional gothic revival style. The house was a ruin with no original internal features remaining other than the two ballrooms.

The brief was to fully refurbish the house with Gothic interiors. A wide black limestone cantilevered staircase was designed to connect the ground floor to the ballrooms on the half landing and the bedrooms on the first floor. A trip was made to an architectural salvage auction in Paris, where 18th century panelled rooms and 16th century Gothic fireplaces were purchased to weave into the new interiors which flow from a vast hall, in which was a Gothic fan vaulted ceiling, leading to an extensive library and the stair hall.

The kitchen was designed to pick up on the Gothic front elevations. The scheme also included a stable yard and the installation of a series of 19th century greenhouses, recycled from a listed building in North Wales.

In all, the house and outbuildings cover some 25,000ft².
